October Update

”The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” - Chinese Proverb

Dear Amirah friends,

October has been another major step forward for us!

Updates
  • The house has been buzzing with activity. Renovations are in full swing! Many of the rooms are getting repaired and painted. Floors are starting to be installed, furniture moved in, and we'll soon be installing our higher-security doors and windows. Our volunteer force has be un-be-liev-able, and the mess is being transformed, room-by-room, into beautiful spaces! We'll be able to show some (non-revealing) pictures at our Evening of Hope - hope you can make it!
  • Speaking of which, preparations for our Second Annual Evening of Hope are also in full swing. This is our big event of the year, where we celebrate progress, thank our supporters and raise money for the upcoming year. It's going to be on December 7th from 6-9 pm on the Northshore. If you're interested in sponsoring a table of ten guests for $400, or helping us secure corporate sponsors at various levels, please contact EOH@amirahboston.org
  • One other key piece we had hoped would come together is now developing! It's so important that survivors have a significant voice in shaping our program, and starting with connecting with a survivors' network at a conference in Denver a month ago, we've had a number of growing connections that have been both encouraging (they are confirming we're on the right track, excited to be part of what we're doing) and helpful (offering insights we would have never been sensitized to). We're developing a survivor advisory group that we expect will have major impact on the success of our program.

Needs
Here are a few ways you can help us get the home open:
  • We've mentioned the need for clothing in previous newsletters, and here's an opportunity to get real practical with that: we're collecting lightly used women's clothing, all sizes and seasons, that will be organized into a free boutique the women will draw from to build their wardrobe. Since we're going to be serving women who are 18 and older, we especially need clothes that 20-somethings will feel special wearing - and not just the usual shirts, pants, etc - we need coats, hats, gloves, women's accessories, (new) underwear, pajamas and jewelry! Our next clothing drop-off day will be November 16th at the Beverly Church of the Nazarene (556 Cabot Street, Beverly, MA) any time between 3 and 9pm. Contact Bob Atherton at batherton@amirahboston.org if you have any questions!
  • Host a gift card party or a fundraising event. We'd love to explore ideas with you, and support your efforts by sending a speaker, materials, etc. Contact us as info@amirahboston.org if you'd like to talk more about this.
  • We still need monthly donors! Every amount helps, and you can set up a monthly donation from our blog or our Facebook page.
  • Three important volunteer needs we have are volunteer placement team, our community partners team and our fundraising events teamOur volunteer placement team helps people who express interest in getting involved find the role within Amirah that best fits them. Our community partners team reaches out to local organizations - churches, clubs, corporations, etc - to explore partnering possibilities. Our fundraising events team provides the conmunication and material support people need when they have an idea for running a fundraiser event for us. If you'd like more information on any of these, please contact Jenny, our volunteers coordinator, at volunteers@amirahboston.org
Please email info@amirahboston.org if you're interested in helping out in any of those capacities.

Events
The Second Annual Evening of Hope will be December 7th from 6-9 pm. If you'd be interested in partnering with us as a Table Host (commit to $400 donation and fill a table of 10 people) or helping us collect Corporate Sponsors, sell Ad Space or solicit raffle items, please email EOH@amirahboston.org. We will begin seating folks not connected to a Table Host on November 15.

Thank you for your partnership!

Blessings,
The Amirah Team
